Children's Craft of the Month - Children's Room
~This month, children will be making bird puppets!  Supplies and directions are available from the children's librarian any time during the month of May.
 
Financial Literacy Month Program - Credit and Credit Reports
6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. | Library Classroom
~Build a better credit score and save thousands on loans, car insurance, and other forms of credit.  This free program is sponsored by Lutheran Social Services and the Superior Public Library.  Reservations preferred (715-394-2054 x5711), but drop-ins are welcome.
**People who attend will leave with a free copy of their credit report.

Friends of the Library Meeting

~The Friends are a fun group of people involved in all sorts of activities that support the Superior Public Library.  Membership forms are available at the library.  Join today!

The Friends of the Library will be holding their annual meeting and potluck lunch on Monday, May 20 at 10:30 a.m. in the library Classroom.  All members and those interested in becoming members are welcome.  The annual meeting is an excellent time for new members to get involved, so we hope to see you there!

LIBRARY CLOSED for the Memorial Day Holiday
SPL will be closed Saturday, May 25, through Monday, May 27th.  We will reopen at 9:00 am on Tuesday, May 28th.  Stay safe!

Sandra Cragin will be our featured artist this month.  She says "Several months ago my "Orange Collection" was featured as artist of the month.  This new collection I titled "In the Red".  My work is 'non-objective', mainly acrylic, watercolor, papers, and inks."  Sandra's works will be on display in the case on your right as you enter the library lobby.  Enjoy!

Summer Reading Program
June 17-August 31
~One great way to keep your children reading this summer is to have them join the Summer Reading Program.  Kids and teens will receive reading logs in the Children's Room between June 17 and August 31 to track their summer reading and earn prizes. Kids 11 and under will earn prizes for every four books they read, and after reading sixteen books, they earn a free paperback book! Teens, ages 12-18, will have to read eight books in order to receive a new paperback book. It's as easy as that!

~Last year, everyone used art to make "Wish You Were Here" postcards.  Art collage cards focused on the Lake Superior St. Louis River Freshwater Estuary Bay, Pokegama River as well as slough and grassy areas. We are doing it again!  It’s all “hands on” for PostCards ll  for ages 4 and up.  Superior Council for the Arts instruction is free.  Materials will be provided.  Donations welcome.  Details:  715 392-6007 www.superiorcfta.org.   Registration required.

Bringing Back the Piping Plover, Part 1
2:00-3:00 p.m. - Meeting Room
~Come visit with St. Louis River Alliance staff for a hands-on educational experience into the life of the piping plover. Trained piping plover monitors will bring the sandy beach to you with an interactive display of the piping plovers’ habitat, their nests, and predators they face.  Hear about the plight of this extraordinary and rare migratory shorebird:  what is being done locally to save this bird from extinction, and how you can help.  Educational materials and fun projects will be provided!

The Frog Guy (aka Randy Korb, Wisconsin naturalist)
2:00-3:00 p.m. - Meeting Room
~Come experience local amphibians during this uniquely hands-on, emotionally exciting, and highly educational program.  Participants hold, feed, water, and listen to the calls of many native species of frogs, toads, and salamanders- from tiny spring peepers to big bullfrogs.  Randy will read from his book Blinky: A Special Gray Tree Frog.  Blinky, who was struck by a car and survived, but lost an eye in her accident, makes a live appearance. This is an interactive show that stirs the intellect and arouses high excitement and laughs in children. The Victoria Gotsky Trachtenberg Reading Fund sponsors this program

Water Cycle Program
2:00-3:00 p.m. - Meeting Room
~The Research Assistants from the City of Superior’s Environmental Services Division will be at the library to teach kids about the water cycle.  You can help them demonstrate how water moves from the Earth, to the sky, and back down to where we use it.  There will also be a craft that you can take home with you.

Kitchen Chemistry = 5 cool Food Experiments!

~Science is great!  Food is great!  What happens when you mix up a batch of science and food?  Awesome food science experiments, that’s what!  Come and join us for hands on learning and fun as we explore the world of food science.  This free program is open to youth of all ages and brought to you by Douglas County 4-H, Wisconsin Nutrition Education program and UW-Extension.  We’ll see you in the kitchen!

Craft with Amy Stangland

~Come make dirt and eat it too!  We will create a whimsical dessert using chocolate pudding, Oreos and gummy worms.  Eat alone or share with a friend.  Enjoy your snack while listening to a story.
