Ongoing program - 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, Children's Room
Stop at the Children's Service Desk to register your child for this ongoing program.  No child is too young to be read to.  Pick up a starter packet, including a reading log and recommended reading list.  Incentives awarded.

One Book Northland voting
Readers from Duluth/Superior, Cloquet, Virginia and other northeastern Minnesota communities are all joining together to read and discuss one book. For the second year, Northland readers will be choosing the 2016 community read. Voting begins September 1. Votes can be submitted online from the library's website, or visit the library and submit a paper ballot in the box provided. The winning book will be revealed at the beginning of October.

Read to a Dog!
4:00 - 5:00 p.m. | Children's Room Storyboat
~Children are invited to meet, greet, and read to a dog! Carolyn Sturdevant will be here with one of her Shetland sheep dogs*, who are great listeners! This program is a fun and easy way for children to develop and hone their literacy and communication skills. *Both Tanzy and Tracy are certified therapy dogs through Therapy Dogs International.

Canning: Step-by-Step

~UW-Extension Family Life Educator Araceli Whitwam-Sell will join us for a FREE class that shows how to preserve your fresh produce! She'll discuss the equipment you'll need, basic steps for food preservation, tested recipes, as well as safety tips so you can safely enjoy your harvest during the long winter months. Pre-registration is NOT required. Also, bring your pressure canner lids for FREE gauge testing. **Testing is done off-site. Lids will need to be picked up at the UW-Extension office.**

Putting Your Garden to Bed

~Join us for this FREE program featuring Jane Anklam, UW-Extension Agriculture and Horticulture Educator. She'll explain how to clean up and prepare your garden beds for winter, and also share tips for planning next year's garden. You're invited to bring your favorite garden tool, garden photos, or produce that you've grown and wish to show off to the rest of the attendees. Whether you've had a bumper crop or a lousy growing season, come to this free event and share your tips and learn some tricks for next year's garden.

Something Superior Improv Troupe
7:00 p.m. | Library Meeting Room
~Superior's own improvisational comedy troupe, Something Superior, has been delighting local audiences at fundraisers, private parties, and their Improv in the Park summer series. Directed by Cheri Tesarek, these special performers entertain audiences with unscripted and uproarious comic shenanigans. Following this FREE performance, audience members are invited to participate in a workshop and play improv games. This event is appropriate for middle-school age and above.

Author Chad Lewis

~Join author, researcher, and lecturer Chad Lewis as he shares spooky tales of Wisconsin's most haunted locations. From a cemetery in Appleton to a B&B in Milwaukee, Lewis will share eyewitness accounts, case histories, photos, and directions to Wisconsin's most mysterious destinations. Lewis has been featured on Discover Channel's "A Haunting," "William Shatner's Weird or What," "ABC's Scariest Places on Earth," and is a frequent contributor to "Ripley's Believe it or Not Radio." Books will be available for purchase and the author will sign books following the presentation.

Read and Sing Opera!

~A professional opera singer from Minnesota Opera will join us for a very special storytime that uses operatic and classical singing to enhance, inspire, and help engage kids in reading. Children will see a book come to life with excerpts of arias and animated characterizations throughout the reading, as well as be invited to sing along to parts of the book. A craft project will conclude the story hour.
