Kris Nelson is “The Chair Lady,” and has been painting chairs since 1996. She started with two bedroom chairs and the goal of painting them to match a quilt–and now she has painted more than 500 chairs! Her goal is to complete 1,000 before she turns 100 years old. Each chair is painted in acrylic with three coats of poly to protect them. Her subject matter includes animals, people, scenes, and social commentary. Each chair has a personality, and she tries to match the style of the chair to the composition. “The chair is my canvas,” she says. “I have to be constantly turning the chair around to consider all angles at which it will be viewed.” She hopes her chairs will make a difference by taking something ordinary and making it extraordinary.
